L.A, USA: Michael Phelps, has been named as a finalist for the Sullivan Award, which is presented annually to America's top amateur athlete.

Joining Phelps as finalists are Matt Leinart (football player who won the Heisman Trophy awarded to the outstanding college gridiron star. Leinart led the University of Southern California to the national championship last season.) Elisha Au (karate), Natalie Coughlin (swimming), Paul Hamm (gymnastics), Steven Lopez (taekwondo), Carly Patterson (gymnastics), Cael Sanderson (wrestling), Andre Ward (boxing) and Jeremy Wariner (athletics).

The winner will be announced on April 13 in New York. It will be determined by a vote of Amateur Athletic Union, US Olympic Committee members and college sports information directors.

Michael Phelps swam in one-man exhibitions when Michigan plays host to Northwestern at 5 p.m. 21st january and Indiana at 1 p.m on 22nd.

Phelps is taking two classes and is a volunteer coach at Michigan University this semester.

Phelps is voted as one of the 25 most powerful people in the aquatics, along with swimmers like Ian Thorpe and Jenny Thompson. An article of his profile in the Top 25 can be found here.

This is an interview done with Phelps- by bob Schaller on 16th February.

Question: What do you do socially that “normal” college students do?
Michael: Really just hang out. Nothing too big. One of the biggest things I’ve found here is that as a team, Michigan is really close, almost like family away from home. It’s a good group to be able to go to every day.

Question: What’s a new interest you will explore at the University of Michigan?
Michael: I’ll say this: It’s the first time I’m really interested about my classes and excited to go to class to learn new stuff. I’m in classes I want to be in, classes that I enjoy.

Question: Are you recognized around campus? What’s that like, and how are people treating you?
Michael: I’m recognized. Actually people recognize me here more than they did in Baltimore, because Ann Arbor is a smaller city, almost a town atmosphere.

Question: I know your mother’s a great cook. How is your food now, and what’s moved to the top of the menu?
Michael: I started learning a lot of things about being on your own. Making my own food obviously involves going to the grocery store. I make a lot of pasta, chicken and steak. There’s a variety there. (President's note: HE COOKS! *swoons*)

Question: What’s the biggest misperception out there about you after your skyrocket ride to fame at the Olympics? People might be surprised you cook so much…
Michael: I’ve told you this before and (laughs) I will tell you again: People know everything about me. There’s nothing else about me people don’t know. About the cooking, listen, sometimes it’s not always good! This is the first time I have had to really cook for myself, things like dinner, so I’m learning – sometimes the hard way – how to do it. I don’t always get it right.

Question: Your coach, Bob Bowman, seems to have undergone a physical transformation, losing 30 pounds. Is he keeping it off? And how have you sensed him changing as a coach since he’s moved to college?
Michael: I have seen him changing. He’s becoming more relaxed. Bob and (former Michigan head coach/Olympic assistant coach) Jon Urbanchek still run every morning. They are always out there after workouts. They were out there today, in drizzling snow – running in the drizzling snow! He’s routine-oriented, so he’s pretty consistent about that.

Question: What do you like best about Ann Arbor so far?
Michael: I like everything. When I first got here, I didn’t like it as much as I do now. But it’s grown on me a lot. One of the biggest things, like I said earlier, is how close everyone is on this team. To me, that is just awesome, something I’ve never experienced before, and I’m really enjoying it.

Question: What do you miss most about Baltimore?
Michael: The Ravens! (NFL team)

Question: What does the USOC Sportsman of the Year mean to you, and did you ever think five, six years ago that you would have this honor?
Michael: I had no idea even last year that I was going to get this, know what I mean? It’s an amazing accomplishment, a tremendous honor. It’s something the best athletes ever have received over the course of time. To be in the running with the greatest athletes in the world is just an amazing honor. It’s among my most prized accomplishments.

Question: You talked earlier last week at a press conference about adding muscle. You’re a long and lean guy. How will you go about adding it – in the weight room, diet, and so on?
Michael: I think just a variety of different things. I have never lifted a single weight (before Michigan). So I think doing different kinds of training will help me.

Question: Steroids are on the front pages and newscasts again this week in baseball. How offended would you be if you found out a competitor, or even teammate, was “juiced” on steroids?
Michael: I would be pretty upset. You know, in swimming, everyone gets tested the same exact way, and we’re all clean. The majority of athletes in our sport haven’t had problems with (steroids), and that’s one of the reason I enjoy swimming so much. But it is disappointing to have sports that are using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs out there.

Question: All the talk concerning your World Championships and swimming year centers on the variety of events. I understand that you can’t or won’t divulge your schedule, but how has adding and subtracting events affected your training schedule? Do you like it better this way?
Michael: Getting back into the water was my first goal. Now that I’m back into the water training fulltime, I’m back on track, and things are starting to heal. I am definitely looking forward to some new events, taking those events very seriously and making some significant time drops. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of shape I’m in (at Worlds), and I’ll take it from there.

Question: Compare and contrast Baltimore’s winters to your first in Ann Arbor?
Michael: (Laughs) Ann Arbor is cold, much colder than Baltimore and more snow. But other than that, it’s not too different. We never see like 1-degree days in Baltimore, though. Still, it’s a variety here, and I’m looking forward to what spring and fall will be like.

Question: What Olympic teammates do you stay in touch with? Do you chat with some of them on the phone or email still?
Michael: I train with Peter Vanderkaay, so I’d have to say that I stay in contact with him the most. I stay in touch with Dan Ketchum. (Tom) Malchow comes by the pool from time to time. I also stay in touch with Erik Vendt, who is just a great person and swimmer and (gymnast/USOC Sportswoman of the Year) Carly Patterson, who has become a good friend.

Question: While you still have a lot in the tank in terms of your swimming career, now that you’ve stepped into a different phase of your life, what’s something you might consider as a career in your post-competitive swimming days?
Michael: I want to do something in sports marketing, or sports management. That’s the department I’m in here at school right now. I’ve worked with the agency representing me, Octagon, for three years now, so hopefully, I joke with my agent (Peter Carlisle) he will have a job opening for me in a few years when I graduate.

Question: In terms of non-swimming preparation, what’s something you might do different for 2008 in Beijing?
Michael: I have no idea. Three years down the road is a long ways to look. Right now I’m going to take it day by day and try to live it up and just get better.

Question: Before Athens, you used to answer the question, “How many golds will you win?” so well with your, “I don’t have a gold, I just want one,” comment. Now, when that question is posed to you about the 2008 Games, what will your answer be now that you have six already?
Michael: My answer is this: Hopefully, I can do better next time than I did this time.

Question: How hard was it to come down off the rush that you experienced in Athens and right after it?
Michael: Being able to have an opportunity like that was a lifetime goal and something I’ve always dreamed of, so it was a dream come true, an experience of a lifetime. But, yes, it was a life-changing experience. But you just go on to the next day, the next challenge and the next part of your life.

Question: What have you learned about yourself this past year?
Michael: I don’t know (pause)… I think it’s the drive that I have. The mental toughness is definitely there for me. But a lot of it has to do with the drive. I have a lot of personal drive. My recovery time is huge, which is another reason I was successful last year.

Question: Are you thinking about 2012 at all? I mean, I know it’s outside of your current short-term and long-term goals, but is it possible?
Michael: Anything is possible. I would love to see New York have the 2012 Games. If I’m still around, still swimming, it would be great to hopefully end my career in the U.S.

Question: How are things in Ann Arbor? What’s the college life like up there?

Michael: It’s definitely different being back in class. It’s good. I’m just taking two classes to get back into the swing of things. I had to do my first real college assignment the other day, so hopefully that went well. It’s definitely a new atmosphere, both in the classroom and in the pool. I’m getting used to training with a bunch of new guys, but things are going better than we thought. I had a meet a week ago. Bob and I predicted two seconds slower than I swam, so I guess things are on the right track. I’m just enjoying myself and getting back in the normal routine.

Question: What was the assignment on?

It was a 3-5 minute speech just to sort of get to know everyone in the class. It was “college show and tell” – that’s how the professor put it. We pretty much had to come in and bring something in, explain about it. One of my biggest things I’ve been proud of so far is winning an Olympic gold medal, and that’s what I wanted to come in and talk about.

Question: Did you bring the whole pile of them?

No I just brought one. I only have one. I haven’t seen any of the other ones since the Games. My agent has all of them. He’s keeping an eye on them for me.

Question: What’s your first competition back?

I swam at a meet – Michigan swam Northwestern two weekends ago. I swam a few exhibition races. But I am going to be swimming in a meet the first weekend of March in Texas at the University of Texas. Then, Nationals are going to be first weekend of April. That’s the big thing. That’s the meet we’re gearing up for now.

Question: First year in college is typically an exciting time for most freshmen, but considering your year last year, I would suspect it’s somewhat of a comedown. Can you talk about your motivation and how you’re handling getting excited about going forward?

One of the things I’m actually excited about is going back to school. That’s the first time in my life, really, that I’ve been excited to go to school and to continue that part of my life. This is an opportunity to start the second part of my life, and I’m going to take it.

Question: Obviously this is a tremendous honor, and given your performance in Athens, it would be hard to imagine anyone else who could have gotten it among the men. On the other hand, you had that – I’ll call it an incident – at the end of the year. Did you wonder if you might push yourself out of contention for this type of thing?

With what has happened, it has been a learning experience and a big mistake that I’ve made. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I am extremely honored to win this award. You look at all of the great athletes who could have won, and I’m definitely in a line of some of the greatest athletes in the world. Really being able to have an opportunity to win this award is an honor.

Did your speech include a discussion of your 2008 plans?

It didn’t. It was only 3-5 minutes, so didn’t want to get points deducted by going over. My 2008 plans are, well I’m back in the water right now. I’m pretty much back to 100 percent after being out of the water and having a small set-back with my back. Other than that, things are going really well right now. I swam a 200 IM last week, and I went 1:43.0, which is two-tenths off the American record. My coach, Bob, and I were talking about going 1:45 or 1:46. I hit the wall and saw 1:43, so I think things are going pretty well right now. If I just keep things going, hopefully 2008 will be an even better summer than 2004.

Question: Which medal did you bring in?

I can’t tell you. I can’t read Greek. I saw 200m, so it’s 200 meters. It’s either the butterfly or the IM. They asked me, and I had no idea what it was.

Question: It doesn’t look like Ian Thorpe is going to be swimming this year in the World Championships. It’s sort of a low year for a lot of swimmers. Why did you pretty much get right back into the water and somewhat of a full competition schedule?

One of the things Bob and I like is to be is in a routine. If we’re in a routine, things are good. I think getting back into the routine was something that was important to us. If I’m swimming and I’m going to school, then that’s really all I’m doing. That’s what I want to do. I’m ready to compete again. We had our goal meeting the other day to talk about things I want to accomplish this year, next year and years to come, so there are already goals that are set for the next four years, and we’re starting to work for those.

Question: Can you elaborate on the events you’re planning on swimming at the World Championship Trials in April?

We’re going to start swimming some new events, I’ll say that. We’re going to open up some new doors and see where events take us. One of the things I’m doing as a person is growing and starting to get some more muscle. Hopefully that will give me a little extra power that I didn’t have last summer. Hopefully with that and being able to train up here with Peter Vanderkaay and Klete (Keller), some of those guys who are back in the water, hopefully all of us will be able to do something over the next year or two.

Question: Are we talking sprints here?

I don’t know. The events I’m more than likely going to swim at World Champ Trials are events I have swam before, but we’re trying to take a more serious approach to some of those events. There’s one race that I’m really focused on right now. On the event program, there’s two events from last summer, and that’s it. We’re not planning on doing anything as big as this summer, but it’s enough that things will be challenging and keep me excited.

Question: And how many are on that schedule?

We’re not quite sure. We know of about three or four individuals. We’re still up in the air about a few, but we have a pretty good idea. We’ll just have to see how things keep going and how training goes. I think right now once we go down to Texas and get a good feel for things, after that meet, we’ll be ready to decide.

Michael Phelps' Trial

Michael Phelps has been sentenced to 18 months' probation yesterday after pleading guilty to drunken driving. Phelps was fined $320 and ordered to pay $70 in court costs, must attend a meeting sponsored by "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" and must give speeches to students at three schools by June 1, advising the students about making choices and warning them on the dangers of alcohol.

Judge Lloyd O. Whitehead also ordered Phelps to abstain from alcohol and illegal drugs during his probation. His record will be expunged if he complies with the terms of probation. Phelps must report to a probation supervisor once a month by telephone or as directed by the court.

"I recognise the seriousness of this mistake," Phelps told the judge in a packed courtroom.

"I've learnt from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life."

2 veteran Maryland lawyers will be representing Michael Phelps on the drunken- driving charges.

"We should not forget that this 19-year-old young man has always conducted himself in an exemplary manner. He is dealing with this situation in the same responsible way in which he has always lived his life."

PowerBar spokeswoman Vanessa Wagar said she expects Phelps to continue as one of the company's sponsored athletes.

"Part of athletic sponsorship is celebrating highs with athletes as well as working through their difficult times."

Visa issued a statement saying that Phelps, who has apologized for his behavior, has represented the company and the country "with great honor and dignity."

Phelps' sponsorship agreement with AT&T Wireless, is ending this year. The contract, like all other marketing contracts for AT&T and Cingular, will be evaluated as part of the changing company.

Evan McElroy, spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, issued a statement saying that the organization knows Phelps takes his "role model status" seriously.
"Boys & Girls Clubs are in the business of helping young people learn from their mistakes, accept responsibility and consequences, and ultimately become better people."

The Maryland Center for Character Education, where Michael Phelps is part of this newly formed advisory board this month, will keep him on the panel, said retired Baltimore Circuit Judge John Carroll Byrnes, the center's chairman.

Phelps' character has not changed, and his statements accepting responsibility were "in keeping with his good character."

Earlier this month, the center issued a news release singling out Phelps for praise.
"Michael Phelps is a strong role model for young citizens who can see his life of dedication to his sport, and in his personal conduct of civility, honesty and humility a personal philosophy that has brought him both world wide success and world wide respect."

The organization's Web site, however, includes a version of the news release without mentioning Phelps. His name is not listed as an advisory board member. His mother, Debbie Phelps, is listed.

"At first, I was kind of angry. I wanted to make sure he was OK. Then I got really angry. He had everything going for him. Such a lapse in judgment. I'm sorry for everyone who supported him, which is everyone. He let himself down; he let us all down."

Michael Phelps arrested.

It seems like with fame, one can never avoid stepping into the quicksand of trouble. Michael Phelps has been arrested for drunk driving on Thursday night (4th Novemeber) at 11.30pm in Salisbury, Maryland.

Phelps had been driving with 2 passengers (unidentified, hopefully not a girlfriend!) and had failed to obey the STOP sign along Route 13 and Bateman Street and was bid to pull over by a state trooper.

The trooper "observed signs indicating the driver may be operating under the influence". Phelps was then charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired, violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a traffic control device. He signed the traffic citations and was released shortly after 1 a.m. Friday.

Police described him as "fully cooperative" during the incident. They said his 2005 Land Rover was released to a friend who had not been drinking.

Police would not say whether Phelps took a blood-alcohol test and, if he did, what his blood-alcohol level was.

Under Maryland law, the legal age for drinking is 21 and Phelps' offence is punishable by a maximum of a year in jail, a $1,000 fine and 12 points on a driver's license for a first offence. It carries a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail, a $500 fine and eight points for a first offense.

"I made a mistake. Getting into a car with anything to drink is wrong, dangerous and unacceptable. I'm 19, but no matter how old you are, you should take responsibility for your actions, which I will do. I'm extremely sorry for the mistake that I made."

He declined to answer further questions, including whether any of his endorsement deals are in jeopardy.

Implications
Ryan Schinman, president of the Platinum Rye Entertainment consulting firm, said the arrest is "a huge blow," even if Phelps is never convicted.

"He made a name for himself not only in the pool, but with his squeaky-clean image, which is hard for corporate America to come by these days."

Phelps' endorsements from companies as McDonald's could be jeopardized because they likely contain morality clauses. But some companies may make allowances because no one was injured.

Marc Ganis, president of Sportscorp Ltd., another sports marketing and consulting firm, said that although he doesn't think Phelps' current endorsements will be affected, the arrest will "tarnish his image."

Mark Lepselter, president of New Jersey-based Maxximum Marketing, said the long-term impact will be minimal so long as Phelps doesn't have future problems.
"I don't think this is going to be a major blow to his career ... I don't think there are many people who have not made some mistake along those lines when they were 19."

Phelps' adoption of Riverview Elementary School in Halethorpe has created a unique problem for the education of youngsters about the perils of alcohol and drugs.
"It's easy for kids to look to celebrities and say, 'Everybody's doing it.'"

Bowman's words...
"When you're Michael Phelps, you don't really fit in anywhere. You don't fit in with adults just yet. You're still 19. You don't really fit in with kids your own age who are in college. It's very hard to know where you are in the scheme of things."

"Nobody should feel sorry for him because he chose his behavior that night," Bowman said. "But I hope people can stand behind him when he's down just like they stood behind him when he was on top of the world."

Michael Phelps has already returned home for two weeks since the WSCC.

"We had boxes of fan mail at home. I sat in front of the TV one day and opened every piece of mail. We have Michael Phelps buttons, so I signed a button, stuck it in an envelope and mailed it back to them."

Michael Phelps gave a speech about his experience at the Nova Southeastern University on 21st October.

"It's been fun [since the Olympics] and something I am enjoying for sure. This is all a totally new experience for me."

He says that so far the Ryder Cup and being able to meet celebrities like Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown, Donald Trump, actors Samuel L. Jackson and Danny DeVito and singer Smokey Robinson has been the most interesting events he has taken part in.

"Being able to see all these people and meeting them is cool. There is still one person I want to meet, and that's Michael Jordan. I have wanted to meet him my whole life."

Mother, Debbie, allows him to buy "a new toy" each time he breaks a world record. He has finally bought the Range Rover "that I have driven for about three hours since I've been away so much." It's parked in the driveway next to his souped-up 2000 Cadillac Escalade with spinning rims, TV sets in the dash and headrests, DVD player, X-Box and sub-woofers.

"You can't exactly play country music in that car!"

He will be moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan in a few weeks time, where he will train with University of Michigan's USS club team, Club Wolverine, and serve as a volunteer assistant coach. He plans to buy a house close to the pool and an English bulldog. He starts classes in January and will probably study sports marketing or management.

"One of my biggest goals is to promote the sport of swimming. Right now this is the biggest time for swimmers to really get up and do something for their sport. The love I have for the sport and how much I want to change will help."

The Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, a competition that works towards the objectives of making science fun for middle school students while cultivating the next generation of American scientists will be holding the finals on 23-27th October at the University of Maryland.

Students will compete for more than $100,000 in scholarships and special prizes, as well as the title of "America's Top Young Scientist of the Year."

While Michael Phelps returns to Baltimore for recovery, we check out at what is happening in the swimming world with regards to him!

Did Eminem really sent a CD package to Michael Phelps? Yes, it is true.

Amanda Beard says this of him: "I open up US Weekly, and I see this boy inside. You haven't seen that in swimming very often."

Michael Phelps had declined to give details of the injury. This is the first time an injury has interfered with his career.

"I honestly don't think this is a big issue."

Nearly 60,000 tickets had been sold for the five days of the World Short Course Championships, probably because of his appearance.

But he realises the fickleness of fame.

"If the stardom dies down, the stardom dies down," Phelps said. "I'm looking forward to getting my life somewhat back to normal. This whole run has been exciting."

Right now, Michael Phelps is more than willing to return to his home, something he hasn't done since July 2nd.
He wants to:
1. Find out what Eminem sent him
2. Shop for a new car (he's eyeing on a Range Rover)
3. And pack up to join his coach, Bob Bowman, at the University of Michigan as an volunteer assistant.
"I'm going to follow Bob wherever he goes."

4. Compete in at least one more Olympics.
5. Get a British bulldog, as soon as he figures out how to manage it with his swimming committments.

By the time the 2004 Olympics began, Phelps had been on the cover of Time, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, the New York Times Magazine, ESPN the Magazine, Parade, TV Guide and Communication Arts, a photography annual. He also appeared in advertising in those magazines and on television.

His coach, Bob Bowman, says this of Michael Phelps' performance in Athens "I think about not only how well he performed in race after race, but how close he really came to the Holy Grail. I mean, really close."

Said Olympic finalist Rick Say of Canada, runner-up to Phelps in the 200 freestyle here: "He is the greatest swimmer the world has ever seen."

His swimming commitments the next four years have yet to be decided. Phelps already has mentioned the possibility of trying for seven golds again in 2008.

"Things happen for a reason," Phelps said of missing by one gold medal. "This is going to motivate me the next four years, the way 2000 made me do what I did this time."

Going after multiple medals again may present different issues for an older Phelps, even if he will be only 23 in 2008.

"I don't think he'll be able to do it when he gets near 25," said Slovakia's Martina Moravcova, 28, another swimming workhorse and double medalist at the 2000 Olympics. "He will be able to do it mentally but not physically."

"One of the biggest things that struck me was how fast it went by in Athens," Phelps said. "It wasn't a feeling of, 'Is that all there is?' because we sucked in everything we could. But when we finished swimming, Lenny and I looked at each other and said, `Our four years of preparing for this are over."

Lenny Krayzelburg, calls him, Ian Crocker and Michael Phelps', "Aqua Beatles" due to the overwhelming popularity of Disney's Swim with the Stars tour.

"It was pandemonium in some places," Matt Townsend said. "Little girls would be screaming at the bus, and one day Michael asked a bodyguard if he could throw something to the kids. He tossed out a Sharpie and a towel, and guys were pushing the girls out of the way to get them."

Townsend has been Phelps' buddy for 10 years. They graduated from high school together. The swimmer invited Townsend and another high school classmate, Corey Fick, to travel with the tour for two weeks.

"I was a little worried because Michael blew up into stardom so fast, really between the end of the Olympic trials (in mid-July) and the Olympics," Townsend said. "He talked to me before the Olympics about going on the tour and then, even after things got crazy, he told us to come. That shows you how down to earth he still is."

The only noticeable difference about Phelps is his hair. Grown out, it softens his appearance, diminishing the dominant effect of large ears on his angular face. During "Phelpstival," University of Maryland freshman Jen Markey told the Baltimore Sun, "He's hot."

After the festivities, Phelps was driving in stop-and-go traffic on the Baltimore Beltway when three girls in another car recognized his Cadillac Escalade. The next thing he knew, the girls were holding the Wheaties box cover featuring Phelps above the sun roof of their mini-van.

The boxes were passed to Phelps' car. He signed and passed them back.

Phelps got dozens of wedding "proposals" and some phone numbers in notes from fans during the Disney tour.

Seriously I find what is going on at the right side of the blog simply hilarious. What a relief from all the studying!

So far, there's no news of Michael Phelps' recovery, so I shall write a little about what's going on.

All the American members of the MPC can read with their own eyes that what was recently blogged is only, and only directed at a certain someone. To save his face, I shall not disclose his name. The certain someone is apparently "patriotic" and "holy". This is just a cover up for his discriminative and blasphemous ways. If everyone reads PROPERLY and understand PROPER PLAIN English, you'll see what we mean. There is really nothing more to say about this, really. If any individual American member who reads this MPC blog really feels that in ANY way we are being insulting to America, do contact me.

I find it unnecessary to deprive others from the discussion of information in the Michael Phelps Club, hence whatever in the tag board shall not be removed, as it clear for all to see.

Holy crap. Seems like I really can't afford to stop posting news especially its the World Short Course Championships period. There's so much news of Michael Phelps now.

On Friday, October 8th, Michael Phelps took part in the 200m Freestyle and won with a new United States 200 free short course record of 1:44.10 set by Josh Davis at Athens in 2000 with a 1 min, 43.59 secs with top qualifier Rick Say of Canada second in 1:44.39.

"There are a few things I would change about that race but I'll take it. I wanted to go 1:44. I acheived my goal. I'm pretty happy right now."

Basketball legend Larry Bird, a Pacer executive, gave Phelps his gold medal.

OK. Now for the important news. Very important.

It seems that Michael Phelps further injured his back in this race, and worsened overnight, and his back has reportedly been bothering him for 1½ weeks. He was using physical therapy and ice to treat the soreness. He said the problem was caused by travelling by bus and sitting for several hours a day during the Disney Swim with the Stars tour with Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg.

He announces his withdrawal, positively upset.

The U.S. team issued a statement early Friday saying he had withdrawn from the 400m individual medley heats but would receive treatment during the day and hoped to swim the relay later in the evening.

Manages a smile...

When his back did not respond to treatment, team doctor Jim Johnson consulted with experts and made the decision to pull Phelps out of the entire meeting.

"As the medical director for USA Swimming, I have elected to withdraw Michael from the remainder of this competition," Johnson told reporters. "He has a slight back injury...and we don't want to take the risk of it worsening over the next three days.

"He's 19, he's got a long career ahead of him and we don't want to take any undue risk to his health."

A concerned Phelps said he accepted the decision of the doctors and wanted to take every precaution having seen first hand how a back injury can end a career.

"My sister was a world class swimmer and had back injuries and it put her out of swimming," said Phelps. "These guys (doctors) know what they're talking about.

"I agree with them 100 percent. If this is something that could hurt my future in the sport, then this is the best decision."

"Hopefully I have a long career ahead of me and we can get this thing worked out.

"It is something you have to be really cautious with...your back especially."

"I would rather not discuss it but it is my back. I just don't want to go into too many details, we're not really sure what it is."

"I wanted to play it by ear and get in the water and swim and see what would happen."

"It felt decent coming into the meet but it started tightening up right after we got off the plane. Sitting on the plane for a few hours coming here, I don't think it helped."

"I wanted to get out that first 100. I knew Rick was going too. I wanted to go out with him," Phelps said. "I was feeling pretty bad the last 75m. I was definitely in pain but I was satisfied with the time."

The US men won the 4x100 freestyle relay, 0.39secs off the world record set by Sweden in 2000. They might have claimed the mark had Phelps participated. He was asked to swim but said coach Bob Bowman did not approve.

"I was (going to swim) but I wanted my coach to decide."

He admitted he still feels tired after his Olympic performance.
"There's probably going to be a lot of tough races," he said. "I'm glad I have one under the belt."

And he ended up quitting the whole Championships though earlier in the day, he only pulled out of the 400m individual medley to seek treatment in Baltimore for further evaluation and treatment. He had planned to swim in the evening's 800 freestyle relay final, but was advised against it.

"I'm done here for good. I've decided not to chance anything."

"It's something we don't want to play with because my sister had a back problem and it put her out of swimming for good. Hopefully in a few weeks or days this will all be over with."

"You can probably tell this is one of the most disappointing things I've had happen."

The short course championships was supposed to be the last major meet of the year for Michael Phelps, who is planning to move to University of Michigan next month with his coach, Bob Bowman.

Michael Phelps was "the main attraction of the meet" and was scheduled to swim in all 10 sessions in the temporary pool constructed on the floor of the cavernous Conseco Field House.

Ok I feel that it is quite serious about injuries. We all know how badly things went for many a sportsman because of them, and I am definitely not disappointed that Michael Phelps has withdrawn from the championships. Would anyone like to send something to Michael Phelps for his speedy recovery or something? I think it is quite hard to find his contact though. If anyone has any idea, PLEASE tell me.

News One: Transcript of Disney's Live Question and Answer session on 25th September.

Gold medalists Michael Phelps, Lenny Krayzelburg and Ian Crocker recently took time from their cross-country "Disney's Swim With the Stars" tour to answer your questions. Dive below the surface with these swimming heroes and check out the transcript from their interview on September 25, 2004.

Disneyland: Welcome. It's not every day that you get a chance to chat with a real Olympic champion. Right now, we will be chatting with three of them! This is a live chat with U.S. Olympic swimming gold-medalists Michael Phelps, Lenny Krayzelburg and Ian Crocker, who between them earned 8 gold and 2 bronze medals at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Adrienne: Michael, Lenny, Ian: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
Lenny: Definitely an elephant because of the size of the animal, and also it's a symbol of luck. So it's my favorite animal.
Ian: I'd want to be a large cat, like a cheetah because I like cats and I like speed!
Michael: I would be a fish. I love the water. Maybe a dolphin. (President's note: YES! *punches fists into air*)

Martha: MP, Lenny and Ian, silly question, but I have to ask: All three of you spend a lot of time in the water, swimming, training, etc., What do you three do, or what do you use to keep your skin healthy and keep it from drying?
Michael: I'm used to the water, so my skin doesn't dry that much. With the amount of time we spend in the water, we're used to the chlorine so it doesn't really bother me.
Lenny: I use lotion all the time after practice to take care of the dryness. I swim a lot outside, and the combination of sun and chlorine is not good for the skin.
Ian: I think Michael said he just gets used to it and doesn't use anything. I've never used lotion either, just a normal shower after practice.

Buggy: Hi Michael, Ian and Lenny. My little boy is five and a half, and loves to swim. He has been in the water ever since he was 2 years old. What would be the best thing for him to pursue swimming? He so wants a pool in the backyard but we can't afford one, so I take him to the Palm Park pool were he loves to swim.
Ian: Try and find a club team that he can swim around with. At that age, they're not doing a lot of hard dedicated work, it's more just swimming with friends and socializing, which is obviously something he likes.

Adrienne: Michael, Lenny, Ian: What was the strangest thing you encountered while on the tour so far?
Michael: I've seen a few interesting T-shirts that people have made with slogans and our pictures on them. I saw one last night that said "I want to be like Mike" and had a picture of me on it. That's been the most interesting thing I've seen.
Lenny: I don't know if there's anything "weird" that has happened on this trip, but on a positive note, the reception we've had has been incredible. That's something none of us ever expected: the excitement, the number of people that show up, and the excitement they show during shows.
Ian: Along the same lines as what Lenny said, probably one of the funnier things is the things people ask you to sign. People ask us to sign their shoes, socks, cell phones. You try not to smell the sock when you're signing it!

Sigma: What does it feel like to be standing on the gold-medal stand, watching as the American flag is raised and the National Anthem is played?
Michael: It's absolutely incredible, the greatest feeling I've ever had. Whenever I was on the medal stand, I'd always be trying to find my family in the stand and seeing the smiles on their face, hearing the National Anthem, was amazing. For me, the past four years of training go through my mind, and it's all worth it.
Lenny: It's obviously a very special feeling knowing that you've accomplished something you've worked so hard for. It's rare in life that we get to do something where we see results in front of everyone else, and knowing you're reached the top in something you do is probably the greatest thing you can experience in life.
Ian: It was a special moment being on the podium, hearing that National Anthem and hearing the Americans in the crowd singing along with the anthem. You could hear them all like they were a group, and that made it a really special experience.

Laura: At twelve, I was a state record holder and winning most of my events. At 13, I haven't come within 5 seconds of my best times. It's been 11 months, not only without a time drop, but with time added. Do you have any advice on how to get through this slump?
Michael: I think everyone goes through a period like that. But the most important thing is to try to stay positive. That's the best time to stay positive and make sure you're focusing on your goals. Nothing will come easy in anything you do, so keep trying and keep your mind positive. That's what you should try to do.
Lenny: The thing I can recommend is maybe to take some time off, and just kind of recharge the battery. Maybe go play other sports, maybe hang out with your friends. But get your mind off it for some time. That way you get the hunger, the excitement back and you'll come back with a different attitude. You might come out of the slump, but no matter how long it lasts, it's about ups and downs and eventually you'll see the upswing if you're willing to continue.

Adrienne: Are the screams of teenage girls overwhelming?
Michael: One of the things I've noticed when I'm introduced in the show is that sometimes I can't even talk, there are so many people and they're screaming and yelling - it's awesome! It's so great to get the amount of support we're getting on the tour. I never really thought that any of this would happen, so it's all kind of new for me. It's kinda cool from all angles!
Ian: I think it's special to hear fans screaming and know they're excited about seeing us. At a swim meet, there's no telling who people are cheering for, but it's always great when there are lots of people there who are excited about your accomplishments.

Stephanie: Is there anything unique or special that you do to prepare for meets?
Lenny: Most of the preparedness happens during training every single day, so it's all about getting to a meet and being as relaxed as possible. Personally, I just try to stay in the crowd of people, just talking so my mind doesn't think only about swimming. That helps me to relax. And at this level, we all know what needs to be done once we jump in the pool.
Ian: I try and just relax and reflect on all the work I've done in the past season. That's one of the most important things, remembering your goals and how to swim your races. It's also important to get your mind off racing before you race sometimes.
Michael: I like to get in my own world. When I'm getting ready for a meet, I always have headphones on, listening to rap music to get myself fired up.

Aurora from Spain: Aren't you frustrated that swimming only gets wide coverage at the Olympics or world championships?
Michael: Right now, considering how the US team did in Athens, I think it's going to be an incredible few years and with the help of Disney and the other major sponsors for the tour, I think it will be one of the biggest sports of the year. With all we've done, there will be a lot of attention paid to swimming in the next few years.

Questions for Michael
Mallory: Michael, for the people who didn't get to see you at the Swim with the Stars clinics, are there any plans for another tour, or are there any other commercial deals coming up?
Michael: We hope there will be another tour. This was the first of its kind, and we wanted to see how it went. It was good!

Calla: Michael, I noticed you and Ian Thorpe shared a laugh in the room before your race. What did you two say to each other?
Michael: Nothing really - we were both just focused on what we had to do, which was swim as fast as we could.

Happyface: Michael, did you talk with anyone regarding your decision to let Ian swim the relay, or was it something you decided on your own?
Michael: It was a decision that I thought about, and I made the final decision. I wanted him to really prove what he could do, and he led the team to a gold medal and a world record.

Barlow Girl: Michael, it's so sweet how close you are to your mom. What do you admire most about her?
Michael: Just the type of woman she is. She raised me from a little boy pretty much single handed. I've been living just with her for about 12 years now, and she raised me to be the man I am today. She's been an incredible help for the last 19 years.

Bridget: Hi, my question is for Michael. I've read that you are the youngest in your family. If you asked your sisters today, would they describe you as a typical annoying little brother, or did you always get along well with them?
Michael: When we were growing up, we got along; we were just very outgoing with each other. But now we're so close as a family. We have a blast together.

Future Olympian: Michael, I watched every race you participated in in Athens. In all your interviews you said you could barely sleep. Did that have an effect on your races?
Michael: With the environment we were in, it was hard to really get some sleep. You're so excited, there's so much adrenaline. But you're at the Olympics, so you can take one race and just have a blast with it.

Mara: Michael, you are going to be an assistant coach at University of Michigan, and you love to work with kids; do you see yourself becoming a full-time coach once you're finished swimming competitively?
Michael: I'm not sure. I'm going to be a volunteer at the University of Michigan, and hopefully I can help them somehow. With all I've learned over the past five years, I hope I can pass some of that on to them. For the future, I'm not sure where things will lead. But I will say "Go Blue!"

Brit: Michael, first off, I loved watching you in Athens. I was wondering if you are looking forward to coming to U of M and what types of classes you are taking. Thanks a lot!
Michael: I am. It's going to be a good change for me to get out on my own and experience the complex a bit and see how things are. I love sports. I'd love to stay in sports management and be really involved in sports over the next few years. (President's note: Anyone going there next year?)

Phelps Fan17: Michael, what team do you usually like to be on NHL Hitz? And I was wondering if you three play video games together and who usually wins.
Michael: I haven't played too much NHL Hitz recently, mostly Madden. Lenny can't hang with me in Madden! We have a lot of fun, and we all just sort of fool around with Madden.

Jena: Michael, will you ever come to Pittsburgh, PA?
Michael: I don't know - no idea if I'll be in Pittsburgh any time soon.

Kaylee: Michael, what's your favorite food?
Michael: I love ice cream! I'm a huge ice cream fan, and I pretty much eat anything so I can cram stuff into my system as quickly as possible.

Erica: Michael, I am an admirer of yours, and I am inspired by your races in Athens. It has inspired me to go for the gold. Hope to see you in 2008!
Michael: Thanks Erica!

Agnes: Michael, now that you have 6 gold medals, how does it affect your mindset now with regards to competitiveness? Are you more or less competitive?
Michael: I'm the same place I was before. I love to race, I love to compete. I hope to have lots of opportunities to race with people, and get the best out of everyone in the water.

Rickey: I am the father of 3 young girls. You have become their hero. What would you like to say to all those who call you their hero?
Michael: It's incredible, absolutely amazing to be able to have someone look up to you to hope to do something you've done. It's definitely a great feeling that's very memorable.

Loving Phelps: Michael, are you enjoying this tour even though you're away from your family?
Michael: I love it! It's a great thing for the sport of swimming, and we haven't really had that many opportunities to get swimming to a new level. I think we're raising the bar for the sport of swimming, and it definitely will help. Disney's been a great help in supporting us through this whole thing.

Annalise: Michael, what is your favorite thing about touring the country and meeting new people?
Michael: This is my first time around the country by bus, so it's kind of fun. I've never been able to really witness all the states. One of the coolest things was when we were driving through the Rockies - we got some pretty sweet pictures. And when we get to a venue, we have so much support from the fans. It's sold out, there's yelling and screaming, so it makes us have more fun because of it. The enthusiasm the fans show is just amazing.

Annaven: Simple and ordinary question for you, Michael - what is you favorite book?
Michael: I just read a book called "Bringing Down the House" which is about students who learn card counting. I couldn't put it down. In school, my favorite book was "Of Mice and Men." Michael Phelps Is Hot: Michael, how does it feel to have a street named after you and a key to the country?
Michael: LOL! It was kind of neat when I heard about the street near my school being named Michael Phelps Way. It's great how the city of Baltimore has really been behind me.

Honda Girl: Michael, we've all heard about your Escalade and how you've had it customized. Do you plan on doing any performance mods to it or any future cars you might buy?
Michael: I'm interested in some other cars. I saw a Range Rover the other day on the road, and it's a car that stuck out for me. I want to test drive it when I get home, and also a Cadillac Seville. I don't plan to do anything to the Escalade performance-wise, maybe just a sound system.

Julie: Michael, is there a story behind the misspelling of your name on the jacket you wore in the Vanity Fair shoot, or was the wardrobe person just not paying attention?
Michael: I have no idea! We noticed it after we were done the shoot, so I guess they just used it. I'm not sure if they noticed it, but I saw it when I got home and took the jacket off and it was misspelled.

Alli From Cali: I heard that in the tour finale in California there will be a special guest. Anyone want to clarify?
Michael: I'm not sure who the special guest will be, sorry.

Questions for Lenny
Donna: Lenny, what do you like most about the United States?
Lenny: Obviously this is the land of opportunity. This country allows you to be successful, so it's up to the individual to decide what life path you want to take and what you want to accomplish in life.

Gabby: Lenny, what were your biggest challenges when you first came to the US?
Lenny: When I first came to the US, there were challenges in not being able to speak the language, not understanding what people were asking me, having to adjust to the culture. Trying to understand American culture was very hard for me. Swimming was a great avenue for me. I could learn all about the American environment, and become Americanized a little faster than other immigrants who come to this country can.

Astrayan Lover: Lenny, while recovering from shoulder surgery, what kind of exercise did you do, and how long did it take to let you swim without any trouble?
Lenny: Unfortunately I was never feeling 100 percent after the shoulder surgeries. It took 3-4 months to feel comfortable, 12 weeks before I could even get in the water. And then it was really slow during rehab. There were a lot of exercises to strengthen the muscles in the shoulder, as well as the bigger muscles surrounding the shoulder to help protect it. So it was a total of 6-8 months before I could really work it. My advice, if you're having surgery, is to be patient with the rehab. If you jump back in too fast, you'll re-injure it.

Astrayan Lover: What made you choose between the different strokes and your pet events?
Lenny: When I was 8 or 9, I started to swim seriously and my coach at that time felt the backstroke was the one I should swim. He felt I looked most comfortable on my back, and my stroke was technically the best. So I just continued, and tried to make that particular stroke my best.

Aurora from Spain: Hi Lenny! I've heard the way you trained back in Russia was way different - care to elaborate on that? Also, do you keep in touch with the friends you had there? Thanks!
Lenny: No, I don't keep in touch with my friends in Russia. I left when I was 13, so many of them have gone on different paths. I have visited quite often, and have seem some of them. In fact, 3 years ago we had a reunion in Odessa, with about 35 of us. These were people I hadn't seen in about 13 years. In terms of the training style, yes, it's different there. There's more intensity at a young age, training 5 hours at young ages like 9 or 10. That's part of the sports culture back there.

Arugula: Lenny, how did your experience at the 2004 Games compare to the 2000 Games?
Lenny: The experiences were different - in 2000 I won 3 golds and was the favorite going into the Games so the expectations were high. But during those Games, the pressure was so high I didn't really enjoy the Games. This time, there was less expectation on me (although I had high expectations for myself). I felt I embraced the Games more, and I enjoyed it more.

Sweetpea Jen3655: Lenny, how did it feel when you heard you were one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People?
Lenny: It was funny, and obviously a pretty cool thing. The way I look at it, it's a popularity contest and how much people - the agents, the company that represents you -are able to promote you.. Being the year of the Olympics, there was a lot of attention on me because of the multiple medals I was expected to win, so I think that helped me get into the People list.

Sweetpea Jen3655: Lenny, my dad is also a naturalized citizen. Did this bring a special meaning to being on the Olympic team?
Lenny: Definitely a special feeling representing the US, and not being born in this country. Being able to represent this country in the international arena is definitely humbling, and a very special experience to go through.

Shelly: I am from the Baltimore area and coach many sports. I wanted to know if there was anything your coaches did while you were growing up that truly motivated you to work harder?
Lenny: There's no question that when I was younger I was pushed quite a bit. I was challenged, and I really liked that. But I feel there's a fine line between that and challenging a child too much. Challenging an athlete is extremely important. Kids at a young age need to know that in any walk of life, the characteristics of hard work and commitment will help them. The more they learn that, the more it will help them. Supporting them during their quest is extremely important as a coach.

Maven: When you guys were finished with all your events, did you feel a sense of relief, or was there a letdown of any kind?
Lenny: There was a relief, knowing you went to the Olympics and did well. You dream about the Olympic Games when you're at this level and when you get the special opportunity to go, it's a dream come true. You work hard for so long to accomplish that, so you can relax a bit and enjoy the moment after it's over.

Elissa: I am 16 now and I LOVE to swim. But there is only one thing - I want to be faster than I am. A lot of the younger girls are faster than me and I want to be up to their level. I know I should practice more but I don't have time with my job and all. Is there anything that I can do during the practice time I do have to make myself better than what I am? If it helps any, my fastest 100 free time is 1 minute 4 seconds.
Lenny: The way I look at it, you should only compare yourself to yourself. Everyone goes through a different development process. For me, I didn't get really good until I was 20! So be patient, and really believe in yourself. I think that's the most important.

Questions for Ian
Swmangel247: Ian, what are some tips on making my fly faster? I go 1.18.56 in the 100 yard fly. Ian: One of the most important things in fly is getting your stroke time right, getting one kick when your hands are entering the water and one kick when they're exiting the water. Try to get your hips going. Kick, not the arms, is the most important part of butterfly and I think a lot of people miss that.

Mary: Ian, how will you resume your college studies with all of the training and competing?
Ian: When I get back to the University of Texas, I'll continue training and in January I'll try to finish my degree. But overall, trying to balance school and swimming is difficult. It takes a lot of time management and remembering your goals in the water and also in the academic world.

Deanne: Ian, what are you studying in school?
Ian: I'm a kinesiology major with a business foundations minor. I chose that in case I want to go into coaching, because I'd like to always be connected to swimming in some way.

SloRyd: Ian, do you have a close relationship with teammates Brendan Hansen and Aaron Peirsol, and will you continue to train together even now that you've graduated?
Ian: Brendan and Aaron and I are all good friends. One of the things that makes it so special is that we all have similar goals, so we understand how much dedication and hard work it's going to take to obtain those goals, and sometimes there aren't a lot of people who do understand that So that makes a pretty good bond. And we'll continue to train at the University of Texas even after graduation, because we all feel it's the best place for us.

Creampuff: Ian, how did you learn that Michael gave you his spot on the relay and did it add any pressure to your performance?
Ian: I found out through one of the managers, because it was late at night after the individual 100 butterfly, and the coaches were in press conferences and the swimmers had all left. I got out of the drug test after my swim, and was told I was going to be on the relay the following night. It was a shock, because I hadn't anticipated being able to be on the relay if I was the second fastest American. I don't feel it put pressure on me. I saw it as another opportunity, and I was glad to get up there with Brendan Hansen and Aaron Peirsol to represent my country at the highest level of swimming.

HSFCat: Ian, do you believe in miracles?
Ian: I believe in divine intervention. I think everything happens for a reason. A lot of times, people get what they deserve. Especially in the sport of swimming, you get out what you put in.

Honda Girl: Ian, has Berta been completely restored? Are you getting another car soon?
Ian: If I had my way, I'd have a giant climate -controlled barn in Texas to collect cars! Yes, Berta's almost done - she's looking good. But I'm not sure if I'll be buying another car. I've got too many toys already!

Astrayan Lover: Ian, does your cat live indoors? Does he/she prefer acoustic or electric guitar? ; )
Ian: I actually have 2 cats, and my girlfriend just rescued another cat yesterday, so we brought it up to 3 yesterday. They're now all indoor cats, because there's a nature preserve behind my house with foxes. It's much easier with the fleas too! One of them likes acoustic guitar when I play and sing to her. Murphy is scared to death of all guitars - any time I pick one up, he runs.

Aurora from Spain: Hi Ian! You are an amazing swimmer but also a talented singer. I've heard your song "Come On" and you are quite good. Have your written/recorded any other music? Thanks!
Ian: No, that was actually the first opportunity I had to play around with music in a studio. I'd like to do it again when I have more time and more people to go into the studio with me.

Sarah: When will you be at Disneyland and are we allowed to take our picture with you guys?
Ian: Certainly, there will be times for pictures and autographs at Disney. We're going to have a pool built on Main Street at Disneyland.

Randy: How are you preparing for the SC World Champs while you have been on the road for so long? Will you be ready?
Ian: We've been training as much as we can. When we get to a city, we find a pool. Michael's been getting workouts from his coach at home, and I have a basic skeleton of a workout so I can add what I want. We've been using the demos at the shows as sprint work, so it works out nicely and I think we'll be as ready as we can.

Sarah: What did you want to before becoming a swimmer? Did it just happen or did you dream of becoming a swimmer ever since you were a child?
Ian: I started swimming when I was 8. I don't think I ever had any dreams before I started swimming. Swimming took care of that when I realized what the potential was and what I wanted to go for.

Kathleen: How old were you when you participated in your first swimming meet?
Ian: I was 8. It was the first season that I started. I remember a time trial before the first meet, to get us used to what racing was going to be like. But I don't remember the meet itself.

Morgan: How long have you guys been swimming for? Are you interested in surfing or learning how to surf?
Ian: I like all things related to water, so yes, surfing sounds like it would be a lot of fun. Aaron Peirsol surfs and raves about it, so maybe I'll try it.

Disneyland: Thank you so much for this chat! Unfortunately, we are almost out of time. Do you have any parting words for our audience?

Michael: We can hardly wait until we get to Disneyland! Go Blue!

In the Disney Tour, I saw this article that has Michael Phelps summing the tour up in a really cute way:

The visit to the Disneyland Resort culminates the swimmers' cross-country "Disney's Swim with the Stars" tour. Arriving directly from Athens, Phelps, Crocker and Krayzelburg participated in a series of personal appearances at local schools, meeting and greeting hundreds of children, and starring in a first-of-its-kind, two-hour swimming celebration show in each city.

"Winning the gold in Greece was a dream come true but going on this tour with Ian and Lenny and meeting the young swimming stars of tomorrow has been simply incredible," said Phelps. "It seems only fitting that we end our tour and Olympic journey at 'The Happiest Place on Earth.'"

News Two: Back to the pool, but...

This article is about Michael Phelps having spent too much time out of water, and he may not perform very well in the coming event in Indianapolis.

"It's more of a mental thing than a physical thing," said Peirsol, who won three gold medals in Athens. "After the Olympics there's a tendency (to think) you've done it and what can top that."

Every time Phelps, who won eight medals at the Athens Olympics, touches a starting block now, the American sports public will assume he can turn the race into gold.

But at the short-course worlds, where Phelps plans to swim in five individual events, gold medals won't be a given. His life since the Olympics has been a string of appearances rather than a steady diet of training laps, and short-course swimming isn't his strong suit. Phelps went to Athens with the stated goal of winning one gold medal. He won six golds and two bronzes. For this meet, he hasn't voiced any personal expectations.

"Just having the opportunity to swim in front of a home crowd is the most important thing," he said.

Phelps does his best in long-course meets (held in 50-meter pools) such as the Olympics, not 25-meter pools.

"In short course there are more turns, which aren't really my forte," Phelps said.

Phelps tends to build his speed throughout a race, Australian swim coach Leigh Nugent noted. That is difficult to do in 25-meter pools, where the 400-meter individual medley — usually one of Phelps' strongest events — requires 15 turns instead of seven.

"If you're not a very good turner, the momentum's going to be hard to keep going throughout the race," Phelps said.

Phelps will compete in the 100, 200 and 400 individual medleys, as well as the 200 free and 200 fly. He's also likely to swim in up to three relays.

For the last month, Phelps has been on a cross-country tour with U.S. Olympic teammates Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg. Phelps hasn't swum more than 5,000 meters in a day, a mark he often meets or surpasses in regular training.

News Three: Michael Phelps to help raise funds for MMS!

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Michael Phelps will be holding a swim clinic for children later this month in the Upstate.

He'll spend about three hours on October 23rd at the Middle Tyger YMCA in Duncan. The demonstration will raise money for Mobile Meals of Spartanburg.

Swimmers between the ages of six and 18 can buy an hour of pool time with Phelps for one hundred dollars. Each tax deductible donation also allows two spectators to accompany each swimmer. Spectator spots also can be purchased for one hundred dollars.

Officials expect the visit to raise as much as $50,000 for the organization.

News Four: Here comes an old challenger!

This is a really funny article about James Hickman, who is trying to win a fifth World short-course title in America, but is hindered by none other than our Michael Phelps!

JUST one obstacle stands between James Hickman and a record fifth World short-course title in America this week - and he's called Michael Phelps.

MEN columnist Hickman is in Indianapolis chasing a nap hand of titles in the 200 metres butterfly.

But that brings him into direct confrontation with swimming legend Phelps, who returned from the Olympic Games last month with six gold medals.

"I'd love to win the title for the fifth time but I know I'm going to have my work cut out beating the likes of Michael Phelps, who will be swimming in front of his home crowd," said Hickman.

"But this will be my last chance of getting that fifth title and I'll be giving it my all."

Hickman won his first world short-course crown in 1997 and his last one two years ago. He was also successful in 1999 and 2000.

The City of Manchester Aquatics star qualified for the championships in his home pool, breaking the British record in the 100 metres butterfly.

However, it will take something special to prevent Phelps adding to his Athens haul.

People just can't get enough of Michael Phelps. Neither can we!

28th September:
Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelberg attended an event in King County Aquatic Center, Federal Way, Washington. Special guest included Megan Quann, 20-year-old Puyallup woman who won two golds in Sydney in 2000. The swimmers passed along words of wisdom, preaching respect for parents and coaches, the importance of hard work and confidence, and told stories of their rise to Olympic glory.

The Olympic champions raced against each other, then competed in a relay with local youth swimmers and a team of media personalities, including John Curly and New York Vinny.

There was around 800 spectators.

What marked this event was the reaction to Phelps, who won two bronze and six gold medals in Athens. Clearly, Phelps' feats during the Summer Games captured the imagination of young people.

More than half the crowd consisted of young girls who exploded like the fans at an N'Sync concert when Phelps took off his shirt. Girls leaned over the rail to get a closer look, swooning, screaming, snapping photos and cheering his every move.

The Bellevue High School girls swim team was in attendance, and one of the team members grabbed the microphone during the question-and-answer session of the event and asked Ian Crocker if he would marry her.

Crocker smiled and responded: "I'm not completely sure that would be legal."

Dear Mr.Cowherd

I am writing in to submit what I feel is the perfect nickname for Michael Phelps.

I believe that many people are too preoccupied with the idea that Ian Thorpe has the nickname of "Thorpedo", and hence Michael Phelps should have one with a "normal" word twisted with his name in it.

Therefore it is not apparent enough that using the most simple word can actually bring out the essence of Michael Phelps.

Hence I propose the nickname of The Dolphin.

"Dolphin", obviously, has the letters "ph" which is also pronounced "f", similar to "Phelps".

The dolphin also has similar characteristics displayed by Michael Phelps.

1. Most are playful by nature, after viewing clips and reading reports of his obsession with the XBox, I rest my case.

2. There are numerous incidents of dolphins rescuing people, like how Michael Phelps generously aids in charitable organisations.

3. The biggest threat of dolphins is man, and if I may boldly suggest, "Thorpedo" is "man-made", and this poses as the greatest threat to the "Dolphin".

4. Dolphins are able to swim up to 40km/hour, very fast for a marine mammal.

5. Dolphins cannot stay on shore (beached) for too long, Michael Phelps similarly needs to be in water everyday.

6. Dolphins can eat up to 100lbs. per day, and we all know what a big eater Michael Phelps is.

The above characteristics are done with research, hence I believe that its credibility stands.

News of Michael Phelps is getting lesser and lesser, and sometimes they are indirect news of him.

Here's an article of Bob Bowman, Michael Phelps' coach, on Phelps' past, present and future plans.

"It was grueling for Michael, but he never snapped," Bowman said. "He's got great ability and a great work ethic and he's seen how he can combine those with the right technique to swim fast.

"You have to remember what he's done all his career. He beat everybody at 11, at 12, at 13, all his life. In his mind there was no reason to think he wouldn't beat everybody again. I could tell he was particularly excited before his first race there. But, no, he doesn't have doubts."

Then comes 2005, challenging for Bowman, recharging for Phelps. "We'll be doing well if we can get Michael matching this year's times next year," the coach said. "Because there might be another Michael out there, swimming right now, that we don't even know."

Michael Phelps is USA's Swimmer of the Year, AGAIN!

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Michael Phelps was named Swimmer of the Year on Saturday by USA Swimming at the US Aquatic Sports Convention in Orlando. Phelps has won this award three times since 2001. Phelps, the most prolific Olympic medal winner since Russian gymnast Alexander Dityatin in 1980, will next be in action two weeks from now at the World Short Course Championships in Indianapolis.

The gracious gesture was not lost on the youngsters in Atlanta.

“He’s the guy who let the other guy swim for him,” said 10-year-old Makalani Mack, who had just come out of the water after getting a ride on Phelps’ back.

Asked if he knew how many medals Phelps had won, Mack said, “I think it was five.” Told the correct number, his eyes got bigger. “Ohhhh, eight.”

Michael Phelps will be swimming in the World Championships in Indianapolis.

The Oct. 7-11 meet will be in two 25-meter temporary pools being built inside Conseco Fieldhouse, the home of the NBA's Indiana Pacers.

Phelps, who won six golds and two bronze medals in Athens, is entered in the 200-meter freestyle, 200 butterfly, 100 individual medley, 200 IM, 400 IM and 800 freestyle relay.

Yes the exams are over, but not the major one, but I'm really excited to be blogging here with guilt-free conscience while munching on my instant noodles. I'd like to say more about this wonderful flavour I'm trying but I've got news of Michael Phelps hot and fresh from the oven.

Michael Phelps, who won six Olympic gold medals last month, will try to repeat his Athens performance at the seventh FINA World Shortcourse Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.
Meet officials announced the 19-year-old American will take part in every session of the five-day competition beginning on October 7, providing he qualifies for the finals of the six events he has entered.

Pool sharks: Fresh from the Olympics, medal-heavy swimmers Michael Phelps, Amanda Beard and Natalie Coughlin visited Speedo's Garment District showroom to help the company kick off its new Axcelerate active sportswear line. While best- known for its swimwear, Speedo is moving into the gym and athleisure market. Beard and Coughlin modeled Axcelerate keyhole sport tops, shorts and zip jackets from the line that will be in department and sport specialty stores in the spring, while Phelps wore a prototype T-shirt and pants from the men's line to debut later next year.

Now, for some really impossible news.

Eight-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps isn't a rock star, but it was hard to tell from the piercing screams that greeted him and fellow gold medalists Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg Tuesday morning when they showed up at Northside Prep.

When they saw 19-year-old Phelps, groups of female students hung signs outside the windows that said, "Marry Me!" and "We * Phelps." Another gaggle of young admirers stood in the school parking lot, snapping pictures with disposable cameras and trying to get their swim caps, textbooks, T-shirts and magazine covers autographed. One girl went for a more personal touch, asking Phelps to sign her arm.

Phelps, who called his rise to fame when he won six gold and two bronze medals "an incredible ride," said he hopes appearances like the one at Northside attract new faces and more attention to the sport.

He said he also wouldn't mind attracting the attention of presidential daughter Jenna Bush.

"I want to meet her," Phelps said. "I hope we'll have an opportunity."

Thanks to Kaylee, Lenny JC, emily and those who gave your thumbs up for this site, you don't know how much it means to me. And for the first time I felt a real sense of connection with everyone as a club when I saw k's message (either that or I mis-interpreted it when she actually wants more updated info about Michael Phelps... )
Well that made me even more guilty cos' I can't update for at least another 2 weeks... ARGH!

The ever famous trademark style of Michael Phelps before every swim.

President's note:

I figured out that since MPC is beginning to see a healthy growth of wonderful members, we should further expand our club in other ways possible.

Adopting Amanda's idea (loads of credit to her), and on the account that Ian Thorpe is a big fat shit who shouldn't have the upper hand, I've signed up an account for MPC in Friendster.com However, the bloody email for verification has yet to be sent. Members may start adding the MPC friendster account at the email: michaelphelpsclub@hotmail.com

In this way, by having access to each other's account, we will be able to have a more interactive community in MPC. Perhaps in the near future (after our A's) we would be able to organise outings and such.

Those in overseas will not lose out! One pending activity is the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. We will be making ourselves available in the next Olympics to watch Michael Phelps in Beijing. It is then very possible to plan a meeting for ALL members.

Details are still under discussion. This is just to inform everyone of the need to start a financial plan in time for 2008.

To hot pursuers of Michael Phelps, these may be provocative news.

Michael Phelps is said to be attached to a girl in Baltimore, of a non-public status. Apparently, Michael Phelps' announcement that he is NOT attached is a media ruse to delude the public and fans. HOWEVER, this is yet to be proven true, except for people in Baltimore who are constantly commenting in the michaelphelpsonline website.

We can only hope for the best news.

Meanwhile, there are various declarations of interest in Michael Phelps by female sports celebrities such as gymnast Carly Patterson and ice-skater Sarah Hughes. So far Michael Phelps had danced with Patterson during the post Olympics party, and Hughes had a picture taken with him, (President's note: thank goodness his hair looks horrible here!)

In an interview, she said "I was with Michael Phelps's mom, and I asked her, 'what are my chances of getting a date with Michael?'" Talk about being straight-forward!

Michael Phelps also visited the MacDonald's Olympics Champion Crew on 27th August, possibly to have his long-awaited breakfast since a long time. There is a copyrighted version of the photo right here:

I regret to inform everyone that in a recent interview Michael Phelps announced that his celebrity crush is no other than... LINDSAY LOHAN.

(President's note: *collapse* Why must I receive such news on my birthday!)

According to reliable sources, Lindsay Lohan was a talented child actress who is now morally challanged, with habits of smoking and partying (her circle of friends include Paris Hilton). She is rumored to have received a breast enhancement service and is now officially attached to Wilmer Valderrama of The 70's Show fame.

Apparently, he expressed that Lindsay Lohan is "pretty hot. I think she's the cutest of the bunch."

Thank you for your support

First of all, I would like to thank everyone in Baltimore for his or her support. I am very excited to have this chance to share with you a little bit about my life as an Olympian.

It was exciting to get my first gold medal. That was a huge relief. Now, I can look forward to my other events.

I'm resting a lot between races, and listening to whatever Bob Bowman says. He's really strict with my schedule.

I am staying with the rest of the U.S. swim team and am very lucky to share a room with team captain Lenny Krayzelburg. I have always looked up to Lenny, and we have been having a great time.

On our down time, we usually play video games or watch movies.

The atmosphere is amazing, and the energy has been pushing me to perform better than I have ever before.

Keeping busy

Sorry I haven't checked in lately, but the last few days have been pretty busy. I'm having a lot of fun here at the Athens Olympics, and having the time of my life. I'm just trying to stay focused, and stay rested. The 800 freestyle relay Wednesday night was amazing. That took a lot of emotion out of me.

Michael Phelps did not take part in his final event of the 4×100m Medley relay this morning. But we spotted him among the crowd!

Apparently the tired swimmer requested to let fellow butterflyer, Ian Crocker, do the butterfly leg of the race. Crocker is the world record holder for the 100m Butterfly.

We tracked Phelps' excitement throughout the race, cheering on the women's Medley relay, who lost the event. He was visibly tensed while supporting his team.

Phelps tensed, while fellow swimmer Erik Vendt cheers on behind him.

He had no reason for that, as the wonderful team broke the world record set by themselves in 2003 in Barcelona with a whooping 3.30.68mins, overwritting the 3.31.54mins record by 1 whole second.

Papers everywhere have coverage on him, big or small. Hopefully it will continue to do so after the olympics.

If there is one event everyday, Michael Phelps would win 365 golds in a year.

The 100m Individual Butterfly was held this morning. Michael Phelps clocked in at 51.25 secs, once again plucking off the gold medal with relative ease, although fellow American, Ian Crocker:

a.k.a the world record holder for this event
a.k.a the flu and sore throat guy
a.k.a the one who pulled the US down to a bronze in the 4×100m Freestyle relay
a.k.a destroyer of Michael Phelps' 7 gold possibility
(just kidding)

clocked in at just .04 secs after him.

According to the newly elected president of MPC, Mel, the distance between Crocker and Phelps was just "one centimetre".

But results are results after all. Michael Phelps broke Crocker's olympic timing.

The finals for the 4×100m Medley relay is on later. It is quite certain that the US team will once again dominate in this event which they had never lost before. We wish them luck all the same.

Michael Phelps has successfully clinched his 4th (and without much doubt, 5th) gold in the 200m Individual Medley and 4×100m Medley Relay respectively.

Although the relay gold has not yet been confirmed, the finals lineup shows that besides the USA's brilliant timing of 3.35.10mins, Germany ranks 2nd with a large margin off USA at 3.36.65mins. Australia is not in the finals.

The 200m Individual Medley is won at another Olympic Record of 1.57.14mins.

The Michael Phelps Club(MPC) was founded in the wee hours of 15th August, 2004, shortly after Michael Phelps won and broke the world record in his very first Olympic swim in Athens.

Due to time and financial constrain, MPC has set up this blog as a website for convenience in updating. Future upgrading will carry out as soon as possible.
